Summer Newsletter 2010

The rain seems to have passed and perhaps summer is finally here with the hope of long warm days and blue skies. We have all of the cottons, bamboos, sea cell and soy you will need to knit or crochet lighter weight items, along with many new patterns for lacy shawls, ponchos and tank tops.   And for the lovers of year 'round sock wearing and making, we have Tofutsies, Fixation and Bamboo blend yarns.

New Books

Jacksonville will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary this summer and we have in stock “Images of America, Jacksonville” by Margaret LaPlante and the Southern Oregon Historical Society, which could be a great addition to your home library.

“Favorite Scandinavian Projects to Weave” and “Favorite Rag Rugs” both by Tina Ignell, each book includes 45 projects from rag rugs to table linens, towels and upholstery fabric and all chosen from the pages of ‘Vavmagasinet,’ the popular Scandinavian Weaving Magazine.

“New Twists on Twined Knitting” by Laura Farson. This is a fresh look at a traditional Swedish technique that produces richly textured fabrics.

“Amigurumi Animal Friends” Pigs, bears, frogs, chickens and skunks are just of few of the cute little animals featured in this book and these are also another great way to use up left over yarns.

“Handmade Baskets” by Susie Vaughan takes you all through the process of collecting, preparing and making baskets with natural materials.

“Get Spun” a guide to spinning art yarns by combining a variety of skills with unlimited add-in possibilities such as fabric strips, beads and sequins, silk cocoons and hardware.

“The Art of Kumihimo” and “200 Braids” by Jacqui Carey have arrived in time for our July class on  Japanese braiding.  (See class schedule).

July 31st 10 – 2 p.m.:  Kathy Griffith will conduct a Yarn Painting workshop.  Come and paint your yarn for knitting, crocheting or weaving.  Chemicals, dyes and equipment required for this cold batch method will be provided.  This method is limited to non-protein fibers, cotton, linen, soy, rayon, tencel, etc.  No animal fibers or silk.  Yarn must be in skeins and warps wound and tied off as usual.  This workshop requires a minimum of four people and the fee is $30.

Community Service Project

Hats for the Homeless and Caps for Kids are still being supported by many local volunteers who bring their hand made items here to be distributed throughout the community.  We will begin as early as August, first with Kids Spree, a local program that stuffs back packs for children in need to start school in the fall.  In September we will send hats to Southern Oregon Head Start and then as we approach the holiday season we will work with St. Vincent de Paul and the Gospel Mission to help many others in need.  So, thank you for you continued support of this very worthwhile project.
